The authorities played no role in the defense of Mykolaiv, - General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Marchenko
Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Dmytro Marchenko stated that as of February 25, 2022, there were no leaders in Mykolaiv who were willing to take responsibility and lead the city's defense.
He shared this in an interview with former MP and now blogger Boryslav Bereza.
According to Dmytro Marchenko, a key factor in the defense of Mykolaiv was that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, delegated significant authority to the military personnel he appointed.
- The authorities had no role. I can tell you that at the time of my arrival in Mykolaiv on February 25, no one was ready to take responsibility. No one was prepared to make any defense decisions; everyone was poised to leave the city. Many of them even fled the city. But I must give credit to Valerii Fedorovych for granting significant powers to the people he appointed to positions. This probably played a crucial role, - said the Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
He emphasized that it was the people, including military personnel and ordinary citizens who provided the Armed Forces with information about the movements of the Russian army, who "defended Mykolaiv."
- It was definitely the people who defended Mykolaiv. This includes the 36th, 79th, special operations forces, territorial defense volunteers, and ordinary people who got involved and passed along information to us; they did the toughest work. However, there was simply no command in Mykolaiv at the time on the 25th. There was no one to take responsibility, organize the military, and establish the defense, - concluded the Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
