Spokesperson for the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Dmitry Pletenchuk, explained why the Russian army did not capture Mykolaiv and Odesa using landing ships.

He shared this information during the broadcast of the program "Dialogue."

Dmitry Pletenchuk noted that when carrying out naval operations, a significant issue arises regarding the logistical support of the units that have been landed onshore.

- It should not be forgotten that this raises a serious question about the logistical support of the units. When there is a water obstacle, it is necessary to: rotate personnel, continuously evacuate the wounded, and supply weapons, ammunition, and food. This will be much more complicated, - said the spokesperson for the Naval Forces.

Additionally, he emphasized that landing operations are the most challenging type of naval operations, and they are most often conducted in support of ground forces.

- Also, the Russians did not land in Odesa or in the Mykolaiv region from the sea, although they had quite significant landing capabilities. 12-13 large landing ships - at least a dozen of them could have been utilized, - said Pletenchuk.

The spokesperson also pointed out that the Russian army attempted to bypass Mykolaiv from the north to "cut it off from Ukraine," but the ground forces were halted by the Ukrainian military. Hence, Russia did not conduct naval operations.

- In Voznesensk, they were simply stopped. They tried to circumvent Mykolaiv from the north. They just needed to bypass the city to proceed further to Odesa. To cut the city off from supplies, logistics, and Ukraine. But they were met with significant resistance there. There is a river called Mertvovod. Its name is not without reason. Consequently, they were forced to suspend the naval operation because it lost its purpose, - said Dmitry Pletenchuk.

He emphasized that the Armed Forces of Ukraine were prepared for a Russian landing, as the coastline was mined, and engineering barriers were established, among other measures.
