How many Ukrainians have died during the war - calculations by The Economist
Both Ukraine and Russia have paid a horrifying price over three years of war. A November publication by the Wall Street Journal, citing Western intelligence agencies, reported that up to 200,000 Russian soldiers have already died.
This is reported by The Economist, as stated by Focus.
According to estimates from the British publication, published in July 2024, as of June 21, between 106,000 and 140,000 Russian military personnel have been killed. Calculating Ukraine's losses is more challenging, largely because Western allies are reluctant to disclose their assessments.
To estimate Ukraine's losses since the full-scale invasion in February 2022, journalists gathered data on battlefield casualties that emerged through leaks or publications from intelligence agencies, officials, researchers, and open-source intelligence. These estimates are difficult to independently verify. Fallen or missing soldiers are not always included in such assessments. Nevertheless, this data helps provide an overview of the approximate number of casualties.
"They estimate that at least 60,000 to 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died so far. Additionally, about 400,000 have sustained such severe injuries that they can no longer participate in combat. This data does not account for civilian casualties, which is surprisingly underreported. It is believed that many tens of thousands of civilians have died," the publication states.
Statistics from the UAlosses website indicate that at least 60,435 soldiers have died since 2022. Unlike other sources, UAlosses maintains a catalog of names and ages of the deceased, allowing losses to be calculated by age groups and the percentage of the male population. (Although some Ukrainian women also serve on the front lines, the overwhelming majority of fighters are men).
These figures suggest that 0.5% of the pre-war male population of Ukraine aged 18-49 have been killed. This data is incomplete, and not all age information about soldiers is known. The actual proportion of Ukrainian men who have died in the war is higher. The number of those who have suffered serious injuries and can no longer fight is even greater. For every soldier killed, there are 6-8 severely wounded who can no longer participate in combat. Almost every 20 men of conscription age are either dead or injured to the point where they cannot fight.
The losses for both sides—Ukraine and Russia—have already surpassed those of the United States in the Vietnam and Korean wars combined. The number of combat casualties is approaching the losses of the United States in World War II. Russia's losses in Ukraine since 2022, not including foreign mercenaries it has recruited, overshadow its losses in all its wars since 1945 combined.
