"God forbid": Kim on the military's entry into politics and power in the country

The head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Vitaliy Kim, expressed the view that military personnel cannot be effective politicians.

He shared this opinion in an interview with TSN.

According to him, a politician should be a manager, and there are very few such individuals among servicemen. He emphasized his great respect for the military. However, Kim stated that having a military leader in the government will not lead Ukraine to development.

- God forbid. The ratings will fall again. But I am against this. I have great respect for the military, I collaborate and am friends with many, but everyone should stick to their own business. If we have a military command junta, that’s a different story. This means we will have a military theme for the foreseeable future, and there's no talk of development. I understand the hierarchy within the military team – it’s definitely not there. The military will all "pull" each other in, and all political forces will compete over who loves the country more. Unfortunately, all of this will happen, and it will affect the people. There are professional military managers, but they are few and far between," said the regional head.

He also provided an example of how an experienced serviceman, who became a hero on the front lines and even sustained injuries, was transferred to a recruitment center, where he was caught accepting a bribe.

- One cannot assume that military personnel will come in and restore order. Let me explain. There was an opinion to assign our wounded veterans, who had experience, to more "lightweight" positions and send the recruitment center staff to the front lines. That’s what happened. So, in western Ukraine, a wounded guy, who is indeed a hero, returns from fighting. He arrives at the recruitment center, and they had sent guys there and trained them to fight. This guy, who returned from the front, starts taking money to let other people go. They say to him: "You’re a hero, what are you doing? Those are your guys out there." And he replies: "It’s my turn. I’m not ashamed; I fought, I defended myself, they took their turn, now it’s mine. It’s not a big deal." This is an objective truth. It’s not pretty and so on. He is a hero there – 100% on the front. He works, he lives through the war, and so forth. But to think that he will return to civilian life and be the same hero as a politician or manager is a mistake. Therefore, the military should focus on military matters, while managers should handle their own responsibilities," said Vitaliy Kim.
