"Living with a third heart": Ukraine has conducted a groundbreaking retransplantation surgery for the first time (video).

The Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has performed the first heart retransplantation in Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the medical facility.

"A unique operation took place at the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine — a 30-year-old named Petar underwent the first heart retransplantation in Ukraine," the announcement states.

The Heart Institute emphasized that this is already the third heart for the man.

"Seven years ago, the first transplantation was performed in Minsk, but over time, the heart began to fail," the medical institution noted.

The operation was successfully carried out by a team of doctors from the Heart Institute.

"The man has been living with his third heart... We have conducted the first heart retransplantation in Ukraine, and so far, the patient's condition is satisfactory," noted cardiac surgeon Boris Todurov.

The medical institution also expressed gratitude to the donor's family, highlighting that another person has received a chance for a full life.

As a reminder, in July 2023, for the first time in Ukraine, a heart was transplanted to a child.
