In the United States, the administration of newly elected president Donald Trump has abandoned the idea of ending the war with Russia by January 20, which is the date of the inauguration. Currently, they are focusing on re-establishing some form of dialogue, without which no agreements can be reached. Meanwhile, Switzerland has announced its readiness to host leaders from Washington and Moscow, and will not invoke the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant. The Times reported on the potential for peace and whether Zelensky will be present during the meeting between Trump and Putin, wrote the publication.
The portal analyzed an interview with Michael Waltz conducted by ABSNews. A representative of the newly elected U.S. president shared some details about possible future negotiations. Primarily, the official described the war in Ukraine as a "meat grinder" and noted that over the years of conflict, Russia's position has changed, and "even President Zelensky walks into the room in Paris and says he's ready to cooperate." He then acknowledged that the war would not end quickly, but Trump cannot finalize any agreements without "relationships and dialogue." At the same time, Waltz mentioned that discussions are ongoing and a meeting between the U.S. president and the Russian president may take place, likely within days or weeks. It is still unclear whether Ukraine will be involved in negotiations regarding its future, he stated.
"From President Trump's perspective, you can't make a deal if you don't have some kind of relationship and dialogue with the other side, and we will absolutely establish that in the coming months. We haven't set specific parameters [regarding Zelensky's participation]. We're working on that, but I expect a call at least in the coming days and weeks," Waltz said.
Additionally, a representative of the new Washington administration explained their vision for the path to ending the war. The approach will be diplomatic. The reason for this stance is the impossibility of removing all Russians who have occupied Ukrainian territory, as stated in a video by ABS News.
"Everyone knows this has to end through some diplomatic means. I just don't think it's realistic to say we are going to kick every Russian out of every inch of Ukrainian land, even from Crimea," said Trump's representative.
Journalists also recalled the suggestion for a location where Trump and Putin could meet in person. The Swiss government announced that they are prepared to facilitate communication between Moscow and Washington. Foreign Ministry representative Nicolas Bidon explained that they are aware of the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for the Kremlin leader. He noted that there would be no arrest if Putin arrives for peace talks.
Ultimately, The Times reported that the White House hopes to establish contacts between Kyiv and Moscow to end the war.
"Michael Waltz stated that the new U.S. government will foster relationships and dialogue between Ukraine and Russia," the article stated.
We remind you that on January 13, an interview with Russian propagandist Margarita Simonyan was published, in which she discussed the end of the war and the conditions of capitulation being offered to Ukraine.
