A serviceman who caused a fatal traffic accident in a state of intoxication in Hostomel, Kyiv region, was sentenced to 5 years in prison. This information is reported by the State Bureau of Investigations.

In July of last year, the military man got behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol. Along with him in the car were another 24-year-old serviceman and a 21-year-old woman as passengers.

While driving on one of the streets of Hostomel, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, crash into a fence, and overturn. As a result of the accident, the passenger died at the scene, and the female passenger sustained serious bodily injuries.

The driver had a blood alcohol level of 1.04 promille. Additionally, it turned out that the driver did not possess a category "B" driver's license, which allows for the operation of a passenger car or a minibus with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons and a maximum of 8 passengers in the cabin.

The court found the serviceman guilty of violating traffic safety rules while intoxicated. According to part 3 of article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the court sentenced him to 5 years of imprisonment. The maximum penalty for this offense is 10 years.

As a reminder, the court fined former chairman of the Brovary District State Administration, Volodymyr Maibozhenko, 34,000 hryvnias and prohibited him from driving for 3 years. In April of last year, the official, while under the influence of alcohol, hit four people at a crosswalk in Brovary.
