Ukrainians may face power outages in a week due to worsening weather conditions. Meteorologists have reported the formation of an arctic air front that will move towards Ukraine, causing a resumption of emergency and stabilization outages. The head of the Ukrainian Renewable Energy Association, Stanislav Ignatiev, explained the reasons behind the energy capacity deficit on the Telegraf portal.
Ignatiev clarified that the power outages will be associated with a high-pressure zone — an anticyclone, which has already formed over the coldest point on Earth. This coldest point is known as the "Aleutian minimum," located in the Pacific Ocean near Alaska, close to the Aleutian Islands (over 8,000 km away from Ukraine). When the anticyclone reaches Ukraine, the air temperature will drop to -5 degrees, and later it could even reach -10 degrees, the energy expert stated. He reminded that in all previous energy seasons since the war began, power outages occurred under similar conditions. Ignatiev concluded that such a situation is likely to repeat in February, with the estimated date for significant cooling being February 5, as indicated in the article.
"When average temperatures drop to -5 degrees, there is a potential deficit in the energy system during peak hours (morning and evening) of about 2 GW," he said.
According to Ignatiev's estimates, during severe frosts of up to -10 degrees, the peak load on the energy system will increase, and the deficit could reach 4 GW. However, Ukraine can receive a maximum of 2.1 GW from neighboring countries. This capacity will suffice for frosts of -5 degrees. At lower temperatures, energy workers will resume emergency and stabilization outages, the expert explained to journalists.
On the Telegram channel of NEC "Ukrenergo," representatives of the energy company have not yet warned about the power outages expected in the last month of winter 2025. A note that appeared on the morning of January 30 states that due to warm weather, electricity consumption has decreased by 2.4%. It is also noted that the sun in the west, center, and north allows for the operation of solar household power stations.
Meanwhile, on the Ventusky portal, one can see the weather forecast for February 5, 2025. For instance, it shows that in Kyiv at 11 AM, the expected air temperature is -2 degrees. Additionally, it indicates that snow is possible in a band from the Kherson region through Vinnytsia to Lviv.
It is worth noting that on January 17, DTEK announced power outages and the impacts of Russian strikes on thermal power plants. According to the company, during the three years of war, they had to "restore" thermal power plant operations 49 times. In just 2024, there were 20 such instances.
We remind you that in January, the Slovak government threatened to stop supplying electricity to Ukraine during times of deficit, to which Poland responded.
