Zelensky discussed whether he will run for a second presidential term

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that he will make a decision about running for a second term after the war concludes. However, elections will only take place after the state of martial law is lifted.

He made this comment during a conversation with American podcaster Lex Fridman, which was published on Sunday, January 5.

In particular, the head of state noted that it "makes no sense" to discuss elections until the war is over. At the same time, he will talk about the possibility of a second term with his family.

"This is a very complex issue. It depends on how this war ends. Everything depends on what the people want. Primarily, it depends on my family," the president explained.

He added that there hasn't been enough time to discuss this matter at home.

"There hasn't been an opportunity because we are not thinking about it right now... My family and I haven’t seriously contemplated it. This is war. How can we think about what comes next?! It’s very difficult. Indeed, it’s very hard," Zelensky said.

He also clarified that current legislation prohibits holding elections during wartime. Therefore, it is likely that they will be conducted only after martial law is lifted in the country.

"I believe that elections will take place immediately after the lifting of martial law. This is stipulated by law; otherwise, the parliament will have to change the legislation, which will be extremely challenging, as society is against it. We want elections that can be trusted," Zelensky stated.
