President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and French President Emmanuel Macron following a controversial meeting with Donald Trump.
Source. This was reported by the Financial Times citing a source within the Ukrainian delegation in Washington.
According to the FT source, both conversations took place after the Ukrainian delegation was asked to leave the White House without signing an agreement regarding natural resources.
A senior European diplomat, commenting on the behavior of Trump and J.D. Vance, stated that "they are not in their right minds," the FT writes.
“We must finally wake up and realize: it has happened. We are on our own; our parents on the other side of the Atlantic have just thrown us out of the family home, cut off our support, and deprived us of our inheritance,” the diplomat said.
Tensions during Zelensky's visit to the White House arose after Vice President Vance's statement regarding the need for a diplomatic resolution to the war. In response, Zelensky reminded that all previous attempts to negotiate with Putin have been fruitless.
“Since 2014, he has broken promises every time. We negotiated, signed ceasefire agreements, but that did not stop the aggression,” Zelensky emphasized.
This dispute escalated into a heated discussion, in which Donald Trump himself intervened – about which we wrote in more detail here.
After the heated conversation, Zelensky left the White House earlier than planned. Additionally, the agreement on the development of Ukrainian minerals, which was supposed to be signed on February 28, was never signed.
Later, Trump made a statement accusing Zelensky of refusing negotiations and showing disrespect to the United States.
