If the United States follows through on Donald Trump's longstanding threats and withdraws from NATO, the military alliance will simply cease to exist.
This opinion was expressed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with American podcaster Lex Friedman.
Friedman noted that there is a significant chance that America will exit NATO.
"I believe this would be very detrimental to NATO. It would be the end. The demise of NATO," stated Volodymyr Zelensky. "And it's unfortunate because I think it's a very good alliance. Perhaps not everything is perfect there due to bureaucracy and finances. But the countries that are part of NATO do not go to war. There is no war on the territory of any NATO country. That is the answer."
"We do not need security guarantees without the United States. Because it is a very strong, powerful country. The United States emphasizes this. By the way, Putin stated that only the Soviet Union (defeated in World War II. – Mind), where, incidentally, Ukraine was the second most powerful militarily. But he always forgets about that. However, during World War II, without the help of the United States, the support of your troops, your industry, without your money, without your people, Hitler could have won. Of course, everyone fought – both Europe and the USSR – everyone contributed a lot, but without the USA, this (victory over Hitler. – Mind) would have been impossible," emphasized Zelensky.
"Therefore, without the USA, security guarantees are impossible. These are security guarantees that can prevent Russian aggression," the president stressed.
Background. Recall that Zelensky stated during the interview that he does not dismiss the idea of accepting Ukraine into NATO without the occupied territories. Another strong security guarantee for Ukraine he mentions is a weapons package, "which Trump is aware of."
