Ukraine successfully repelled an aerial attack by the Russian Armed Forces that lasted nearly 10 hours—from the evening of October 16 to the morning of October 17. The enemy launched 56 drones against Ukraine, including kamikaze drones "Shahed" and drones of unknown types. Air defense systems neutralized 22 Russian UAVs. The Air Force Command provided details of the assault on their Facebook page.

The command stated that the Russian UAVs attacked Ukraine from the northeast (launched from Oryol and Kursk) and from the south (from Primorsko-Akhtarsk in the Krasnodar region of Russia). The report mentioned an unknown type of UAV used by the enemy, but did not specify how many of such devices were recorded. Additionally, an X-59 air-to-surface missile was fired at Ukraine from the Kursk region, but there are no reports of it being shot down.

Air defense systems (aviation, anti-aircraft guns, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare devices) managed to neutralize a total of 51 UAVs:

  • 27 units—lost locally due to the effects of electronic warfare;

Military administrations reported in the morning about the number of drones shot down and the damages caused by the Russian assault.

Kiev OGA and its head Ruslan Kravchenko wrote on Facebook about an air raid alert that lasted a total of about nine hours (with breaks). The official reported the downing of Russian drones, which caused a fire in the grass on a farmer's field. No further information on the consequences of the nighttime shelling was published by the official. Meanwhile, some details were provided by the Kyiv City Military Administration and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. According to the city authorities, there are minor damages in the Desnyansky district: windows of a kindergarten were damaged, and windows were shattered in a house where debris fell nearby.
