The local authorities in Zhytomyr region are considering the possibility of restoring and launching the international airport "Zhytomyr" after the war.
This was reported by the head of the Committee on State Governance, Local Self-Government, Regional Development, and Urban Planning of the Verkhovna Rada, Olena Shuliak.
From 1990 to 2014, the airport was not operational, primarily due to the unsatisfactory condition of its runway. According to Shuliak, local self-governance has a detailed plan for the repair and modernization of the airport. A total of $20 million is needed for this project, with plans to secure these funds from various sources.
It is noted that "Zhytomyr" could serve as an alternative to the international airports "Boryspil" and "Zhulyany" due to its proximity to Kyiv. Moreover, it is the only private airport in Ukraine, allowing it to avoid government regulation of airport fees and thus offer competitive rates to airlines.
"The free transportation of passengers from the 'Zhytomyrska' metro station could become a significant advantage in the competition for consumers. The launch of the 'Zhytomyr' airport will shorten the distance that residents of regional centers need to travel to reach the nearest airport," Shuliak added.
Additionally, "Zhytomyr" could potentially be considered as one of the centers for cargo transportation. Its strategic location near the E40 highway (Kyiv-Lviv) and the presence of affordable warehouses nearby give it a significant advantage as a future cargo air transport hub. Once the airport is operational, it will be able to accommodate aircraft like the Airbus320, which would enable it to serve over 300,000 passengers annually and handle 5,000 tons of cargo.
Background. Previously, Mind reported that "Boryspil" and Wizz Air held negotiations regarding the operational launch of air transportation after the airspace is reopened.
