The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced the restoration of names that honor the legacy of American greatness. The changes involve the Gulf of Mexico and the highest peak in North America.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine with reference to the U.S. Department of the Interior's website.

The agency noted that according to an executive order from President Donald Trump, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the "American Gulf," and the highest peak in North America will once again bear the name "Mount McKinley."

It was emphasized that "these changes reaffirm the nation's commitment to preserving the extraordinary heritage of the United States and ensure that future generations of Americans will honor the legacy of their heroes and historical treasures."

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, under the Department of the Interior, is actively working to update the official federal nomenclature in the Geographic Names Information System to reflect these changes, which will take effect immediately for federal use.

American Gulf

Previously known as the "Gulf of Mexico," it is one of the most significant assets in the history and economy of the country. Stretching over 1,700 miles of U.S. coastline and encompassing nearly 160 million acres, the gulf serves as a vital artery for American trade, energy extraction, and the maritime industry.

The U.S. Department of the Interior noted that from the rich fishing industry, which drives the local economy, to the vast reserves of oil and natural gas that contribute to innovation and prosperity, the American Gulf remains a cornerstone of the nation's growth.

Its ports are among the largest and most powerful in the world, connecting American goods to global markets.

"Recognizing the ongoing contribution of the gulf to the economic strength and viability of the United States, President Trump's order affirms its central importance to the nation by officially renaming it the 'American Gulf,'" the agency stated.

Mount McKinley

Located on the Alaska Peninsula, it is the highest peak in North America and honors the 25th President of the United States, William McKinley.

The Department of the Interior reminded that McKinley heroically led the country to victory in the Spanish-American War during his presidency, initiating an era of rapid economic growth and territorial acquisitions for the nation. Tragically assassinated while in office, President McKinley’s leadership and sacrifice remain a testament to American resilience and success.

In 1917, the nation officially honored President McKinley by naming the highest peak in North America after him.

"However, nearly a century later, in 2015, the Obama administration removed the name McKinley from the federal nomenclature, which was an affront to the life of President McKinley, his achievements, and his sacrifice. The decision to restore the peak's historical name is a significant acknowledgment of President McKinley’s immortal legacy," the statement reads.

The Department of the Interior also noted that they remain committed to upholding all aspects of President Trump's executive order, "ensuring that the names we use reflect the values, sacrifices, and achievements that define our nation."

Trump's Geographical Claims

Donald Trump stated shortly before his inauguration as president his intentions to make Greenland a territory of the United States. The island has been under Danish protection for centuries and gained the status of a semi-sovereign territory within the Danish Kingdom in the latter half of the last century.

Trump's allies have already submitted a bill to the House of Representatives regarding the 'purchase of Greenland.'

However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the island's autonomy should decide its independence.

Nonetheless, Copenhagen is ready to discuss other options from Washington.

Additionally, Trump expressed his intention to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.
