Russians have spread a false claim that Ukraine and Denmark allegedly signed a security agreement, under which our country is supposed to protect Denmark in the event of an attack by the United States. However, there is no mention of anything like that in the document.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the Center for Strategic Communications of Information Security (SPRAVDI).
Today, information emerged that Ukraine would supposedly be obligated to defend Denmark if the U.S. decides to seize Greenland by military means. This rumor stems from the claim that the countries signed a security agreement on February 23, 2024. However, the information presented is false and is being spread by Russian media.
The Center confirmed that the countries did indeed sign a security agreement, but it pertains to Ukraine's defense against aggression from Russia, not an obligation for Kyiv to defend Denmark from a military attack by the United States.
"Denmark will continue to make efforts to enhance the capacity of Ukraine's Security and Defense Forces to defend against Russian aggression now, as well as to deter further aggression in the future and strengthen compatibility with NATO standards," the text of the agreement states.
It also explicitly mentions that "Ukraine will ensure that military assistance from Denmark is used exclusively for Ukraine's self-defense."
Recall that recently elected U.S. President Donald Trump has revived the idea of purchasing Greenland, a concept he first proposed during his initial presidential term. However, at that time, Denmark declined, stating that the island is its territory and cannot be sold.
Following recent discussions about the purchase of the island, the Danish Foreign Ministry stated that Greenland could become an independent country if its residents desire it, but not a new state of the United States.
Additionally, yesterday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed her desire for negotiations with Trump.
