The newly elected president, Donald Trump, wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Mexico has responded to this statement.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Mexico News Daily.
Recently, Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico. The elected president of the United States also stated that he is already in negotiations regarding the Panama Canal, which he intends to bring back under U.S. control.
"We are going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. It has a nice 'ring' to it. It covers a large area, 'Gulf of America' - what a great name. And it’s fitting," Trump said.
He also reiterated his call for Mexico to help stop illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border and promised to impose tariffs on Mexico.
A day after Trump announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested naming the United States - or at least the southwestern part of the country - "Mexican America."
"Why don't we call the United States Mexican America? It sounds nice, doesn't it?" Sheinbaum said at a press conference.
She noted that the Apatzingan Constitution, created during Mexico's War of Independence, referred to the territory now known as the United States as "Mexican America."
At the time the document was created in 1814, significant portions of what is now the southwestern United States were still under Spanish control. When Mexico became an independent country in 1821, it was much larger than it is today, as its territory included all or parts of several modern U.S. states.
It is worth noting that this is not the first statement from Trump regarding other countries. In particular, there is ongoing discussion about his desire to make Canada the 51st state. Specifically, during his Christmas address, Trump described the "advantage" of including Canada in the U.S. The focus was on a significant reduction in taxes.
In turn, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to Trump's statement about Canada and called Trump’s assumption impractical.
