In a colony in the Poltava region, authorities uncovered a group that tortured and murdered inmates.

The State Bureau of Investigations (GBR) has uncovered a criminal group in the Bozhkov Correctional Colony No. 16 in the Poltava region. Members of this group, who are prison staff, tortured and killed inmates.

This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the press center of the State Bureau of Investigations.

Law enforcement officials managed to prove not only instances of abuse and beatings but also actual murders of inmates. Nearly all victims were individuals who were entering the colony for the first time. A documented case of one inmate's death due to inflicted bodily injuries has been recorded.

"New arrivals were threatened and beaten until their will was broken, forcing them to comply without question with any orders from the facility's administration," the report states.

According to the GBR, each sentenced individual underwent a harsh intake procedure upon arrival at the colony, during which new inmates were made to clean the floor while this process was filmed. In case of refusal, they faced torture: beaten with hands, feet, rubber truncheons, sticks to various body parts, arms twisted, and more.

Among other things, there is a documented case of over 200 blows inflicted on one inmate.

Five employees of Bozhkov Correctional Colony No. 16 have been charged under part 3 of Article 28 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (organized group), part 2 of Article 127 (torture), and the actions of the group leader have been additionally classified under part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional serious bodily injury). They face up to 10 years in prison.
