In northern Yemen, militants from the Houthi group have detained seven UN staff members. All personnel movements in areas controlled by the terrorists have been suspended, and the Organization's leadership is demanding the release of the individuals.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.
The UN stated that the arrests occurred near the capital, Sana'a. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned this action by the militants and called for the immediate release of those detained.
All official movements of UN personnel to Houthi-held areas or within those areas have been suspended for the sake of personnel safety.
"The United Nations will continue to work through all possible channels to ensure the safe and immediate release of those who have been arbitrarily detained," Guterres said in a statement.
He also added that "the ongoing attacks on UN personnel and its partners negatively impact our ability to provide assistance to millions of people in need in Yemen."
The agency was unable to reach official representatives of the Houthis for comments.
The Yemeni Houthi group is allied with Iran. Since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, the militants have been attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in a show of support for the Islamic movement Hamas.
The UK and the US have deployed their fleets and are regularly attacking terrorist positions in Yemen.
In June 2024, the UN also complained that terrorists had detained 11 of its staff members.
For the past three years, the Houthis have held about 20 Yemeni employees of the US embassy in Sana'a. The diplomatic mission ceased operations in the country ten years ago.
Recently, US President Donald Trump signed an order recognizing the Yemeni Houthis as a terrorist organization.
