The German party AfD has nominated its own candidate for chancellor for the first time. Meanwhile, the SPD has officially confirmed the candidacy of the current chancellor, Olaf Scholz.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Welt and Spiegel.
The AfD federal party conference has nominated Alice Weidel as its candidate for chancellor.
"She is the future chancellor," said AfD co-chair Tino Chrupalla.
Weidel was elected as the chancellor candidate by a show of hands. There was no voting with a ballot count.
Alice Weidel is one of the most recognized figures in the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, having gained considerable authority due to her experience and professional career. She holds a PhD in economics, which underscores her expertise in financial and economic policy.
Furthermore, Weidel is one of the few women in leadership positions within the AfD, a party predominantly composed of men.
In turn, the Social Democratic Party of Germany has officially confirmed that it is nominating Scholz for the federal elections scheduled for February 23.
The overwhelming majority of delegates voted in his favor.
It is noteworthy that Olaf Scholz's chances of re-election are rapidly diminishing. More details can be found in the RBC-Ukraine article.
Recall that last month, the country's president Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the current parliament in Germany, stating that in challenging times, it is essential to have "an effective government and stability in parliament."
