Early parliamentary elections will take place in Germany, scheduled after the collapse of the three-party ruling coalition in November of last year.

This is reported by Politico.

Polling stations opened at 8:00 AM local time and will remain open until 6:00 PM. After they close, the first forecasts will be revealed.

These results are likely to signal the end of Olaf Scholz's turbulent three-year coalition, the publication states. According to the latest pre-election polls, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), led by the current chancellor, has 16% support from citizens – the lowest result for the party in post-war German history.

The opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) is leading the electoral race with about 30% voter support, making it likely that its leader, Friedrich Merz, will become the new chancellor. He previously promised to increase military aid to Ukraine and supply long-range TAURUS missiles.

The far-right "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) garnered 20% of the votes. A total of 29 parties are participating in the electoral race.
