President Joe Biden of the United States, who is soon to leave office, stated that one of the key foreign policy achievements of his tenure in the White House has been the successful support of Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
“When Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine, he thought he would capture Kyiv in a matter of days. But in reality, after the war began, it was I who appeared in the center of Kyiv, not him. Putin never did that. Think about it!” Biden said during a speech at the U.S. State Department.
“I became the only Commander-in-Chief to visit a war zone that is not under the control of American forces,” the president added.
“We helped Ukraine stop Putin. And now, three years later, Putin has not achieved any of his strategic goals. He has yet to subdue Ukraine. He has not been able to destroy NATO's unity. And he has not gained significant territorial acquisitions,” Biden said regarding the outcomes of this effort.
“We united 50 countries around the world in a coalition to assist Ukraine, not only from Europe but also from Asia. We provided a tremendous amount of ammunition, and we imposed unprecedented sanctions to ensure that Ukraine continues to fight,” he stated.
“I had two tasks: first, to support Ukraine; second, to avoid war between two nuclear powers, and we managed to accomplish both of these tasks,” Biden emphasized.
“But the work is not finished yet; we cannot abandon it,” the president declared.
On January 20, the new president of the United States is expected to be Republican Donald Trump, who has expressed differing views on resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war. In particular, he advocates for an immediate peace settlement and is willing to negotiate with Putin.
Biden visited Kyiv in February 2023, nearly a year after the onset of the full-scale war.
Background. Recall that the Washington Post reported how Sullivan convinced India and China in 2022 to "save the world" from Russian nuclear threats. Sullivan's strategy contained a paradox: Washington wanted Russia to be defeated by Ukraine's hands, but not in a way that would provoke a nuclear conflict.
