U.S. President Donald Trump claims that Russia stole a hypersonic missile project developed by the United States. According to him, this occurred during Barack Obama's administration – between 2009 and 2017.
The new U.S. president shared this in an interview with Fox News, as reported by The Moscow Times.
“Russia stole the project; they got it from us. Some bad person gave them the project of the super hypersonic [missile],” Trump stated.
However, he assured that the U.S. would still develop its own “super hypersonic” missiles that are “even a step better” than those designs stolen by Russian representatives. Trump promised that work on their creation would begin “quite soon.”
He also noted that future wars would not be fought on battlefields but in the air, making drones very important.
This is not the first time Trump has accused Russia of stealing the hypersonic missile project.
In 2020, he claimed that Moscow possesses a “super-duper-hypersonic missile that is five times faster than a regular missile.”
At that time, he also asserted that Russia had obtained information about the development during the Obama administration. Trump reiterated his accusations at a rally during the 2023 election campaign.
In response, the Kremlin stated that Russia has its own excellent missile. “It’s hard to say whether our missile fits Mr. Trump’s understanding of super-duper, but it’s a good missile that currently has no analogs in the world. And moreover, there is more than one,” noted Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
Officially, Russia has developed several hypersonic missiles: “Zircon” – naval-based, “Dagger” – air-based, and “Avangard” – silo-based. Putin stated in 2023 that Moscow “practically” does not use this weapon, but “it exists.”
Trump first announced the creation of an American hypersonic missile in May 2020. At that time, he claimed it would be 17 times faster than the fastest missile in the world and could hit targets at a distance of 1600 km. This missile was tested in March of the same year.
However, in September 2023, The Wall Street Journal reported that work on hypersonic weapons in the U.S. is still in the early stages, and ready missile samples will not be operational for at least another ten years.
Background. It is worth noting that the Kremlin was offended by Trump’s words about “Russia helping the U.S. win World War II.”
“America always makes money; for America, it’s always business,” Peskov stated, adding that the U.S. does the same in Ukraine.
