US President Donald Trump, responding to journalists' questions during a White House briefing, commented on the likelihood of deploying foreign military peacekeeping forces in Ukraine as a security guarantee if a peace agreement is signed.
"Yesterday, you and Emmanuel Macron mentioned that you spoke with Putin about the idea of peacekeepers in Ukraine, and that Putin agreed to this. The Kremlin, however, has stated that this is unacceptable for them. What is the real situation?" the question read.
"That's not what I've been told," Trump stated. "But some form of peacekeeping will be necessary. So something will be done that will satisfy everyone. We need peacekeepers to protect what I discussed. But the type of peacekeepers that will be acceptable to all. In the end, I am confident we can come to an agreement on something."
Background. Recall that Macron, during a meeting with Trump, stated that France and the UK have developed a plan to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, including the deployment of European troops on Ukrainian territory.
In turn, Trump declared that the US supports this idea. According to the White House chief, he discussed this with Vladimir Putin. The latter allegedly indicated that he would accept such an option, the American president added.
Reuters later reported that following Trump's comments, the Kremlin stated that it would not accept European peacekeepers in Ukraine.
Peskov refrained from public disputes with the US president but effectively confirmed Russia's disagreement with Trump's statements.
