U.S. President Donald Trump gave his first interview as the 47th head of state. In it, he dismissed concerns that TikTok's data collection could expose personal information to China.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing his conversation with a Fox News journalist.
During the interview, host Sean Hannity asked Trump about the issues related to TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance and, therefore, subject to the Chinese government's data collection requirements. He also noted that some refer to the app as a "spy program of communist China," to which Trump responded as follows.
"Does China really care so much about spying on young people? On kids who are watching crazy videos?" the U.S. president said.
Additionally, he emphasized that there are many products made in China in the U.S., particularly smartphones. But no one mentions this.
"But you can say that about everything made in China. Look, we have phones made in China, for the most part, we have so many things made in China, so why don’t they mention that? You know, the interesting thing about TikTok is that you are dealing with a lot of young people. So, is it really that important for China to spy on young people, on young kids, watching crazy videos?" Trump questioned.
Let’s recall that on Monday, January 20, the inauguration of elected U.S. President Donald Trump took place. One of his first actions in office was to sign a decree delaying the law prohibiting TikTok in the United States, which was set to take effect on Sunday, partially coming into force. The app was temporarily blocked.
During the interview, Trump also noted that "many people want to buy" the social network in the U.S., which would allow it to continue operating within the country without violating the law.
In particular, on Tuesday he stated that he is open to the idea of TikTok being purchased by billionaires Elon Musk or Larry Ellison as part of a joint venture with the U.S. government. At the same time, he suggested that the potential buyer transfer 50% of the shares to the government, which would ensure obtaining the necessary approval and a reliable partner.
