U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy for special assignments, Richard Grenell, is scheduled to meet with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The meeting will take place today, January 31.

This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.

It is expected that Grenell will discuss with Maduro the deportation of illegal migrants from the U.S. to Venezuela, as he had previously stated that the country would not accept flights carrying illegal immigrants.

During his first term, Trump claimed that the U.S. does not need migrants from "shithole countries."

Another possible topic for discussion will be the situation of American citizens detained in Venezuela.

Republican Senator from Florida, Rick Scott, has urged that the focus should be on their release. He noted that the main topics of the meeting should be the return of the kidnapped Americans and the deportation of Venezuelan criminals from the U.S.

Election in Venezuela

Recall that on Friday, January 10, Nicolas Maduro's inauguration took place in Venezuela. On that day, he took the presidential oath, marking the beginning of his third term as head of state.

It is important to note that the presidential elections in Venezuela were held on July 28, 2024. According to the results of the voting, the Central Election Commission declared Maduro the winner; however, the opposition conducted a parallel count and labeled the announced results as "fraudulent," declaring their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, the victor.

Shortly thereafter, several countries, including the U.S., recognized Gonzalez as the legitimately elected president of Venezuela, although he was forced to leave the country.

Recently, it was reported that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump wants Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro to step down. However, it remains unclear how this could be accomplished.
