Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump have begun their meeting at the White House.
"You said that there has been enough war. I think it is very important to say these words to Putin right at the beginning... And I hope that together we can stop him. But it is very important for us, you know, to save our country, our values, our freedom, our democracy. And, of course, no compromises with a killer regarding the borders of our territories,” Zelensky is quoted by Interfax-Ukraine.
"We need not just a ceasefire. We have done that before; Putin has violated it 25 times, including during your term, Mr. President,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky reminded that he and Trump had previously discussed drone production over the phone and emphasized Ukraine's need for air defense systems.
"And of course, we really need air defense. You have the best air defense in the world. And indeed, you have helped us during Russian attacks. And I want to talk about how we can exchange licenses," Zelensky said, referring to the license for missile production for the Patriot air defense systems, which he has mentioned several times before.
Here’s what Trump said, the key points:
"It is an honor to host President of Ukraine Zelensky. We have worked very hard and actually known each other for quite a while," Donald Trump said at the beginning of the meeting with Zelensky.
"We have something that can be called a very fair deal," he added, referring to the mineral resources agreement.
"We have had very good discussions with Russia; I spoke with President Putin. We want the deaths to stop, and we will work very hard on that," Trump stated.
Trump also said, "I pay tribute to your generals, your soldiers, and to you personally. You must be very proud of your fighters. But now we want this to end; enough is enough."
"This is the path to peace. This is the way to resolve something. I feel that as the head of this country, I must do this. It’s a pity that we intervened. Because there should not have been any interference, as there should not have been a war. And there should not have been October 7," the U.S. President declared.
Trump responded to the question of whether there will be a meeting between Putin and Zelensky: "They do not like each other."
When asked whose side Trump is on in this war, he replied:
"I’m in the middle; I’m between the two of them. I want this resolved. Europe and NATO need to step up; I am also committed to the Alliance."
"Putin will not want to come back. Once we make a deal – everything will end," Trump asserted.
"We will give Ukraine weapons. I hope we won’t have to send a lot," Trump mentioned.
The American president also inquired when Zelensky would wear a suit.
"We will see," replied the President of Ukraine.
In addition, he showed Trump photos of Ukrainian fighters after torture and exhaustion in Russian captivity.
