Two B-52H Stratofortress bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons from the U.S. Air Force have arrived at RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom.

They are part of the 69th Bomb Squadron, which is stationed at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. Two more such aircraft are expected to arrive in the UK shortly. Further details about the deployment are not disclosed.
Previously, B-52s from Fairford participated in NATO exercises in the Baltic, countering potential Russian aggression in the region. From November to mid-December last year, they conducted a series of nine flights involving training bomb drops over Finland, Sweden, and Lithuania. During these operations, they were escorted by fighter jets from NATO member countries.
The Boeing B-52H Stratofortress is a heavy intercontinental nuclear bomber that has been in service with the U.S. Air Force since 1955 and is continuously being upgraded. It can carry a payload of 31,500 kg.
In addition to American bombers, the English base at Fairford hosts a U2 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft that conducts missions almost daily.
The U.S. has expanded its strategic forces presence in Europe following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This has been a response to nuclear intimidation from Putin, who has threatened both the neighboring country and the West. In just 2024, operational groups of American bombers have been sent to the UK, Sweden, Spain, and Romania.
In mid-January of this year, the U.S. announced the completion of the deployment of modified nuclear gravity bombs B61-12 in Europe.
