The U.S. will not send troops to Ukraine, says the Pentagon

The new U.S. administration does not plan to send troops to Ukraine.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated this at the U.S. Africa Command headquarters in Germany on Tuesday, February 11.

When asked if the White House would be open to sending troops to Ukraine to monitor arms supplies, Hegseth responded succinctly: "We are not sending American troops to Ukraine."

He also reminded that President Donald Trump is committed to swiftly concluding an agreement to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Hegseth noted that the upcoming meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the Ramstein format and the NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels will discuss "capabilities, leadership, and burden-sharing."

"Tomorrow at the contact group with Ukraine and at the NATO ministers' meeting, we will speak directly with our friends. The urgency of this moment requires communication among friends. About capabilities, about leadership, about activation, and burden-sharing," - he said.

According to Hegseth, "the European continent deserves to be free from any aggression," but there needs to be "more investment in individual and collective defense" - 5% of GDP.

Meanwhile, the newspaper The Washington Post reported that Pete Hegseth will not announce new arms supplies for Ukraine at the Ramstein meeting.

"Hegseth will not make any statements regarding new weapons for Ukraine. According to one American official, he does not plan to meet one-on-one with his Ukrainian counterparts but will rather be in 'listening mode' at the meeting, as well as at the NATO defense ministers' meeting on Thursday," - the article states.

In turn, a senior NATO diplomat said that "constructive dialogue with the new American administration will be the most important outcome of the meeting, along with the U.S. commitment to do everything possible to keep Ukraine in the fight."

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that U.S. troops should be part of any international peacekeeping forces that may be deployed in Ukraine in the future.

Zelensky also believes that at least 200,000 military personnel are needed for a potential peacekeeping contingent of allies under security guarantees for Ukraine.
