The new U.S. Secretary of State, during a first phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, expressed concern over Beijing's aggressive behavior towards Taiwan and in the South China Sea.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing the U.S. State Department and Bloomberg.
According to U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, during the conversation with the Chinese Foreign Minister, Rubio emphasized that the Trump administration would maintain relations with Beijing that "advance U.S. interests and put the American people first."
"The Secretary also highlighted the commitment of the United States to our allies in the region and serious concern over China's coercive actions against Taiwan and in the South China Sea," the State Department representative stated.
In turn, Wang told Rubio that China and the U.S. must implement the "important consensus" reached between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and American President Trump.
The Chinese Foreign Minister also reiterated that Beijing will never allow Taiwan to be "separated" from the Chinese mainland and urged the U.S. to carefully handle related issues.
Western media believe that this first official dialogue, which took place on Friday, indicates that U.S.-China relations may deteriorate and are entering a phase of "turbulence."
Bloomberg reminded that Rubio is regarded as a "hawk" regarding China. At his confirmation hearings as Secretary of State in early January, he accused Beijing of a hacking attack, among other things.
Previously, China imposed sanctions against Rubio, a long-time member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. These measures were taken by Beijing against the American politician for promoting legislation that punishes the PRC for human rights violations in Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
It was also reported earlier that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recently had a call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He noted in his conversation with the new U.S. Secretary of State that he looks forward to the opportunity to "work together on Ukraine, Russia, and China."
Additionally, on January 21, it was reported that Rubio, immediately after his confirmation in the U.S. Senate as Secretary of State, commented on the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine. The politician expressed the opinion that each side "will have to give up something."
