The President of Colombia attempted to stand up to Trump, but after facing "tariff threats," he ultimately agreed to his demands.

The leader of the Latin American nation announced his readiness to offer his presidential plane for the "dignified return of Colombian citizens."
Президент Колумбії попытался противостоять Трампу, но после «угроз тарифами» согласился с его требованиями.

The Colombian government, following threats of tariffs, agreed to all of Trump’s terms, including the "unconditional acceptance" of Colombians being deported from the U.S., reports BILD.

This past weekend, Colombian President Gustavo Petro prohibited the landing of two American military aircraft carrying deported Colombian citizens from the U.S.

In response, Trump announced a 25% tariff on goods from Colombia and restrictions on entry.

Gustavo Petro mirrored this reaction, instructing his government to impose a 25% tariff on imports from the U.S. However, Colombia has since capitulated.

Shortly after Trump’s inauguration last week, the new administration began actively arresting and deporting migrants living in the U.S. without residency permits. As part of this policy, the U.S. government started sending such individuals back to their home countries via airplanes.

Colombia turned out to be one of the countries affected by this.

Nevertheless, President Petro opposed these measures and banned the landing of the planes. He justified his decision by stating that migrants are not criminals and should be returned with dignity.

The president declared his readiness to provide his presidential plane for the "dignified return of Colombian citizens." He emphasized that Colombia will accept its citizens "on civilian aircraft, without treating them as criminals."

Trump’s response was immediate and severe. The U.S. President announced the implementation of so-called emergency tariffs of 25% on all goods imported from Colombia to the U.S.

Within a week, the tariffs were expected to increase to 50%.

"These tariffs are just the beginning," Trump warned.

In addition, he announced the strengthening of customs and border control on all goods and for all Colombian citizens for national security reasons. Trump also ordered a ban on entry and the immediate annulment of visas for Colombian government officials, their families, and supporters of the Colombian government.

According to the U.S. State Department, the relevant measures have already begun to be implemented.

As reported by CNN, the visa section of the U.S. embassy in Colombia has been closed.

Apparently, the Colombian government decided to take emergency measures to prevent the situation from worsening.

According to U.S. government data, the trade volume of goods and services between the two countries in 2022 was approximately $53.5 billion. American exports reached $28.7 billion, while imports from Colombia amounted to $24.8 billion.
