The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) intends to acquire the National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" (NaUKMA) and has already begun preparing a request to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. This was reported by KSE President and former Minister of Economy Tymofiy Milovanov.
"The history, status, and traditions of NaUKMA are important. But even more crucial is that teachers receive fair salaries and students receive quality education," Milovanov commented on his decision.
According to his assessments, the situation at "Mohyla" is as follows: salaries are low, the infrastructure is outdated, and the university lacks the resources to compete with the best universities in the world.
Milovanov promises to significantly raise teachers' salaries, improve conditions, and attract investments. The brand and academic aspects will remain untouched, just as they have with KSE.
"I brought KSE out of bankruptcy to the level of a leading university in the country. And I know how to do the same with 'Mohyla'," he wrote.
It is noteworthy that this is Milovanov's second statement regarding a potential purchase of NaUKMA. He first mentioned it on January 10 and even proposed a slogan: "Make Mohyla Great Again."
He suggested gathering funds for the acquisition through a public collection to safeguard the academy from the influence of businesses, oligarchs, and American philanthropist George Soros.
"I want to buy Mohyla as seriously as [U.S. President Donald] Trump wants to buy Greenland," he remarked.
The student community of NaUKMA, in response to Milovanov's initiative, called for restoring historical justice and gathering funds to buy KSE, which was previously part of "Mohyla." This way, the school would return to NaUKMA.
The President of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Serhiy Kvit, also commented on the idea of selling the academy. By posting a relevant image under the post, he indicated that Milovanov's proposal is unacceptable.
"If you know, you know. Of course, the first priority is donations for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. But if you want to support the development of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, you can always do it here," he pointed out.
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine does not consider the possibility of privatizing the National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy." Officials state that they have not received any proposals for the sale of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
Currently, there has been no assessment of the university's value.
Recall that last December, a lecture by historian and sociologist Serhiy Chaplygin was canceled at the business school of NaUKMA due to his views on LGBTQ+ individuals.
Ukrainian authorities promised that starting in 2025, teachers will receive an additional 1000 hryvnias each month. Additionally, 1.2 billion hryvnias are allocated from the budget for the purchase of school buses.
