Former legal representative of Donald Trump during his impeachment trial, Pam Bondi, has officially become the Attorney General of the United States, having received the necessary support in the Senate.
According to Reuters.
54 senators – all Republicans and one Democrat – voted for the 59-year-old former head of the Florida State Attorney's Office. 46 of their colleagues opposed her appointment.
Bondi pledged to maintain the independence of the Department of Justice and "not to involve politics in her activities." This refers to concerns that Trump might exert tight control over the department and retaliate against those who conducted investigations against him and his supporters regarding the denial of election results and the Capitol riot in 2021, the agency reports.
The official also reiterated some of Trump's claims about election fraud in the 2020 presidential election. According to financial disclosures that Bondi submitted to the Office of Government Ethics, she also holds a stake in Trump's media company – Trump Media and Technology Group, reports Reuters.
Background. Previously, Mind reported that Donald Trump named former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as the new candidate for the position of U.S. Attorney General. Trump announced this in a social media post – just a few hours after former Congressman Matt Gaetz declined the offer.
