Civil activist and now Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier, drone operator Vasyl Ratushnyi was killed during a battle on the front lines on February 27, his family reports.
Ratushnyi was the son of writer Svitlana Povalyaieva and the brother of well-known activist Roman Ratushnyi, who died in combat in 2022.
Ratushnyi, a member of the Ukrainian drone unit Birds of Magyar, was killed as a result of a direct attack by an FPV drone during a nighttime combat mission, Povalyaieva stated on Facebook.
“My eldest son, my life,” she wrote.
Previously, Ratushnyi participated in the Ukrainian Euromaidan alongside his younger brother, prominent activist Roman Ratushnyi. Roman was killed during the fighting in Izyum, Kharkiv region, in June 2022.
After the Euromaidan and the subsequent Russian invasion of Donbas, 18-year-old Vasyl volunteered to fight on the front lines in eastern Ukraine.
Following Roman's death in 2022, Vasyl shared that military equipment left to him by his brother helped him in his combat efforts.
Background. It is worth noting that in the summer of 2022, the Kyiv City Council supported the establishment of a landscape reserve in the territory of Protasiv Yar. Mayor Vitali Klitschko promised to preserve this area as a green space in memory of the deceased activist and soldier Roman Ratushnyi, who fought against the development of this territory during his lifetime.
