French President Emmanuel Macron has accused American businessman Elon Musk of interfering in the elections in Germany.
“A few weeks ago, Romania was forced to cancel its presidential elections due to interference and manipulations that clearly point to Russia. Who could have imagined this just 10 years ago? France itself has experienced interference across most of its territories, particularly in New Caledonia in recent months from Azerbaijan. Who could have thought of this?” – stated the French president while addressing French ambassadors in Paris.
“What if we had been told that the owner of one of the largest social networks in the world would support a new reactionary international and directly intervene in elections, including in Germany? Who could have imagined that? This is the world we live in now, and it requires us to engage in diplomacy,” he noted.
Macron did not mention Musk by name, but as Politico points out, it was clear from his speech that he was referring to the businessman.
As reported, in December, Elon Musk expressed support for the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for February 23.
“Only AfD can save Germany,” Musk wrote on X, who has recently frequently voiced support for right-wing populists both in the U.S. and Europe.
Recall that German politicians were shaken by Elon Musk's post stating that “only AfD can save Germany.” The German government described the American billionaire's interference a few weeks before the elections as “unworthy and problematic.”
Background. In May of this year, it was reported that France accused Azerbaijan of inciting protests in New Caledonia. It was noted that Baku seeks to take revenge on Paris by escalating tensions in the overseas territory due to France's support for Armenia.
