The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the Élysée Palace. They discussed bilateral cooperation between the two countries, as well as trade issues related to President Donald Trump's plans to impose increased tariffs on European manufacturers.
However, the primary topic of discussion was Ukraine, as reported by RFI citing a diplomatic source.
"We do not fully agree with the Trump administration regarding the terms of resolving the [full-scale] war [between Russia and Ukraine]. But we first need to define the timeline of our disagreements. Then we can see the negotiation framework, the types of guarantees that can be provided to Ukraine, and so on. These are key issues for these negotiations. France must play its role here," emphasized a source in Macron's administration.
It was noted that the discussions between the French president and Vance lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes—almost twice as long as initially planned.
The day before, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported, citing sources, that "the Trump administration has suspended its plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine to give Europe a seat at the negotiating table."
According to the publication, Trump's special representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, assured European diplomats in discussions that before finalizing the American "peace plan" for Ukraine, he would "individually" consult with NATO allies.
"Europeans who negotiated with General Kellogg were confident that Washington wants to strengthen Ukraine's position in any future negotiations with Russia," the publication also stated.
Background. Earlier, the press secretary of Volodymyr Zelensky announced his meeting with Vice President JD Vance and Keith Kellogg at the Munich Security Conference, which will take place from February 14 to 16.
It was also revealed that U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent will visit Ukraine later this week to discuss the possibility of U.S. access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals.
