The capitulation of Ukraine, which is defending itself against Russian aggression, will not benefit either the USA or Europe.
This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron in a speech to French ambassadors on Monday, January 6, as reported by the French media company RFI.
“As Europeans, we cannot allow Russia to win in Ukraine. It is about our security and the international order. The question is how to support Ukraine in the long term so they can resist and eventually negotiate a lasting peace. No decision can be made without the Ukrainians, and no quick solution will benefit either Europe or the USA,” he emphasized.
At the same time, referencing the statement from elected US President Donald Trump that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, the head of the French state noted:
“There will be no quick and easy solution regarding Ukraine.”
He added that the role of the USA will be to “help us change the nature of the situation and convince Russia to come to the negotiating table”. However, he stressed that it will be up to the Europeans to “build security guarantees” for Ukraine, and this will be “their main responsibility.”
“The new American president knows himself that the USA has no chance of winning if Ukraine loses, and the capitulation of Ukraine cannot benefit either Europeans or Americans,” Macron said.
In the opinion of the French president, if Western allies of Ukraine agree to a “compromise” because they are tired of this conflict, the authority of the West will be “undermined.”
At the same time, Ukrainians should “engage in realistic discussions regarding territorial issues,” Macron warned.
In light of the upcoming inauguration of US President Donald Trump on January 20, many observers fear that Washington will cut financial and military assistance to Ukraine.
Background. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with American podcaster Lex Fridman, shared his vision for a just peace for Ukraine.
Zelensky specifically stated that contrary to the Budapest Memorandum, the signatory countries (the USA, the UK, France, Russia, and China) have shown “indifference” to the official requests sent by Kyiv in 2014 to respond to Russia's invasion of Crimea and Donbas.
Talking about the West's refusal to impose preventive sanctions against Russia and provide Ukraine with sufficient weapons before the invasion in February 2022, Zelensky noted: “Well, that’s nonsense, excuse me.”
He claims that if the USA withdraws from NATO, Putin will destroy Europe, as it will be unable to withstand Putin and North Korea.
