French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France and the United Kingdom have developed a security guarantee plan for Ukraine, which may involve the deployment of European troops on Ukrainian territory, as reported by Le Figaro.
During a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Macron stated that the security guarantee plan could involve sending European troops to Ukraine, but they "would not necessarily be stationed on the front lines" and would instead be present in the country "as a guarantee."
The French President emphasized that European countries "are prepared to go as far as deploying troops in Ukraine to ensure peace."
He mentioned that he had the opportunity to discuss the details of a future peace agreement with American President Donald Trump.
"We were able to discuss in detail the proposals for building this very robust peace," the French president continued. "We want a quick agreement, but not a fragile one," he reiterated.
Macron expressed hope for strong U.S. involvement in ensuring peace in Ukraine.
For his part, Trump stated that the U.S. supports the idea of sending European peacekeeping troops to Ukraine as a security guarantee for a potential ceasefire. According to the White House leader, he discussed this idea with Vladimir Putin, who allegedly indicated that he would accept such an option, added the American president, as quoted by DW.
At the same time, Trump mentioned the possibility of ending the war in Ukraine in the coming weeks.
"I think we can wrap this up within a few weeks. If we are smart. If we are not smart, it will continue, and we will keep losing young, beautiful people who should not be dying. And we don’t want that," the U.S. president noted.
When asked whether Ukraine should concede its occupied territories, he replied, "We'll see."
Background. As reported, Macron, following Trump, announced a ceasefire "in the coming weeks." According to him, if Russia violates it, that would be evidence that it does not want peace.
At the same time, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow is not satisfied with the proposals to introduce European forces into Ukraine. He said that this initiative is unacceptable, adding that this position has been conveyed to the American side.
