Massive wildfires continue to rage in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Due to the emergency situation, U.S. President Joe Biden has canceled his visit to Italy.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing Reuters and CNN.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, as of the evening of Wednesday, January 8, the fire has burned at least 50 acres in the Hollywood Hills.
Specifically, the blaze has destroyed part of Runyon Canyon, a popular hiking and dog-walking spot among locals.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has mobilized over 7,500 firefighters and emergency service personnel to protect the public.
Newsom also issued an order outlining measures to support those affected by the wildfires.
"We are directing all available resources to combat these wildfires, including local and federal resources. Thousands of people in California are working on the ground to fight these fires," he stated.
Due to the extensive wildfires, U.S. President Joe Biden has canceled his planned trip to Italy.
He was scheduled to visit Italy from January 9 to 12 to meet with Pope Francis, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The White House noted that after returning Wednesday evening from Los Angeles, where Biden met with police, firefighters, and emergency service personnel, "the president made the decision to cancel his upcoming trip to Italy to focus on leading a full federal response in the coming days."
Recently, a large fire broke out in the suburbs of Los Angeles. It has been named the Palisades Fire and has destroyed over 1,182 hectares of land between Santa Monica and Malibu. Powerful winds and dry weather are contributing to the rapid spread of the flames.
On January 8, a state of emergency was declared in California. In the city area, three fire hotspots are raging, including in the elite Pacific Palisades neighborhood, popular among Hollywood stars.
On Wednesday, wildfires spread to the Hollywood Hills after five other fires in the area claimed the lives of at least five people, destroyed hundreds of homes, and depleted firefighting resources and water supplies to the limit.
