Elon Musk's company Neuralink has implanted a neurochip in the brain of its third patient.
The entrepreneur himself shared this news, stating that "all devices are functioning well," reports The Economic Times.
By the end of 2025, Neuralink plans to conduct chip implantation surgeries on an additional 20-30 patients as part of its clinical trials. Over a thousand paralyzed volunteers have expressed interest in participating, but the company is only selecting fewer than a hundred of them, according to the publication.
The first chip was implanted in January 2024 in a paralyzed American. He continues to use it and even wishes to make an "upgrade" for controlling robots. The second operation took place in the summer. Neuralink showcased the second patient playing Counter-Strike 2 "by thought alone" just two days after the surgery.
Musk expects that by 2035, brain implants will be accessible to millions of patients. In the long term, this technology will not only allow users to control electronics but also restore mobility to limbs, combat depression, and even enhance brain efficiency.
The company is also developing a new device called Blindsight, which can restore vision even to those who are blind from birth. It has already received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In addition, humanoid robots named Optimus from Tesla are expected to be released in the coming years. According to the plan, these androids will take over much of the routine work currently done by humans. However, Musk assures that they do not intend to take jobs away from people.
For his part, Elon Musk predicts that by the end of 2025, AI will be smarter than any individual human. The likelihood that AI will surpass the intelligence of all humans combined by 2030 is 100%.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that global banks plan to cut up to 200,000 jobs in the coming years as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to take over tasks previously performed by humans.
