Have 10 days: Under what circumstances must working Ukrainians return their pensions?

According to the Pension Fund, citizens who receive a pension while also working have their benefits calculated according to different rules than those who do not work. Additionally, their pensions are recalculated based on updated information regarding their work experience and salary.

Retirees who continue to work or are individual entrepreneurs must notify the government of their status. If they fail to do so within 10 days, they may be required to return any excess pension payments. The specifics of pension accrual were explained on the website of the Pension Fund of Ukraine.

Pensions in Ukraine — Accrual Details

The portal clarified the details of paragraph 2 of article 16 of the Law of Ukraine "On Mandatory State Pension Insurance". The article outlines the rights and obligations of citizens applying for pension benefits based on their insurance record. Among other things, it states that working retirees must report their employment status within 10 days of any change. If they do not comply, they will be required to repay any unlawfully accrued funds, as warned by the Pension Fund.

Important Information for Retirees:

  • Citizens of retirement age who have been hired or dismissed must inform the Pension Fund of Ukraine (PFU) about this;
  • If a citizen is registered as an individual entrepreneur, they will receive pension payments as a working retiree, regardless of whether they earn income from their activities, the fund noted;
  • Any change in status should be communicated to the PFU within 10 days.

How to notify the Pension Fund about a status change:

  • Visit the regional office of the fund and submit the appropriate application. Attach supporting documents (such as an employment contract or dismissal order, work book, civil law contract, etc.);
  • The application can also be submitted through the portal of electronic services of the PFU.

If a citizen is unable to personally submit the application, staff at the regional office can assist them, as explained on the fund's portal.

We remind you that on October 15, the Main Department of the Pension Fund of Ukraine in Donetsk region listed eight cases in which pension payments may be terminated. Additionally, the agency identified categories of Ukrainians who are entitled to a higher pension of at least 8,000 UAH.
