Greenland may become independent if its residents desire it. However, it will not become a state of the United States, as this is unlikely to be the ambitions of the island's authorities.
This was stated by Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.
"We fully recognize that Greenland has its own ambitions. If they are realized, Greenland will become independent, although it is unlikely to have ambitions of becoming a federal state within the USA," said Rasmussen.
According to him, the concerns of the United States regarding security in the Arctic are justified due to the increased activity of Russia and China in the region.
"I don’t think we have a foreign policy crisis. We are open to dialogue with the Americans about how we can collaborate even more closely to ensure the realization of American ambitions," added the Danish minister.
It is noteworthy that during his first presidential term, Donald Trump repeatedly expressed a desire to "buy" Greenland. However, Denmark emphasizes that the island is its territory and cannot be "sold."
In December 2024, Trump returned to his statements about wanting to acquire Greenland.
Amid the encroachments of the elected U.S. president, Denmark is strengthening the defense of Greenland and has also changed its coat of arms.
Meanwhile, the EU has called for respect for the sovereignty of member states following Trump's statements.
