U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio believes that Ukraine is being returned "100 years back." He reiterated that the Russia-Ukraine war should end through negotiations, and both sides must make concessions.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing his statement in an interview with American journalist Megyn Kelly.

"The dishonesty that existed is that we somehow allowed people to believe that Ukraine could not only defeat Russia but also destroy it, pushing them back to how the world looked in 2012 or 2014," Rubio stated.

The U.S. Secretary of State claimed that this has allegedly led to funding a "deadlock" situation over the past year and a half.

"In the meantime, Ukraine is being taken back 100 years. Their energy system is being destroyed. Someone will have to pay for all this reconstruction afterward, and you know how many Ukrainians have left Ukraine and are now living in other countries; they may never return. This is their future, and it is at risk," he added.

Rubio also mentioned that U.S. President Donald Trump's position is that this is a "protracted conflict" that needs to be resolved through negotiations, once again stating that both sides will have to make concessions.

"It will be a matter of tough diplomacy, as we have been accustomed to doing in the world in the past, and we will be realistic in this regard, but both sides during the negotiations must give something," Rubio concluded.

What is known about the Trump administration's position on ending the war in Ukraine

It is worth noting that this is not the first similar statement from Rubio regarding the end of the war in Ukraine. He has previously stated that the Trump administration aims not only for the cessation of the Russia-Ukraine war but also to prevent its recurrence in 2-4 years. He also mentioned the concessions that both sides of the conflict would need to make.

Recall that not only the administration but also the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has repeatedly stated that he seeks to find a solution to the Russia-Ukraine war as quickly as possible. Even before returning to the White House, Trump claimed he could end the war in 24 hours or even less. However, since his election, he has not mentioned these "24 hours" again.

Recently, U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker stated that he aims to find a solution within 100 days after Trump’s inauguration.

According to expert estimates, a conversation about ending the war between U.S. President Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin may take place in the coming months. Signals of readiness for negotiations have already been heard from both Washington and Moscow.

However, Putin continues to issue ultimatums. Therefore, President Vladimir Zelensky warned that Putin is not ready for diplomacy. Thus, Kiev needs a strong position, which can be provided by the U.S. along with other allies.
