Turkey does not oppose Ukraine's accession to NATO, stated Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
However, Ankara calls for a realistic and pragmatic approach to this issue, he added. The official position of the Turkish authorities supports Ukraine's entry into the alliance, the minister emphasized.
On February 24, Fidan held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during which the Ukrainian situation and bilateral cooperation were discussed.
The minister noted that Turkey is well-informed about the Russian-American negotiations that took place in Riyadh on February 18. According to him, Ankara is interested in the stability, peace, and prosperity of both Ukraine and Russia.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confirmed Turkey's readiness to facilitate dialogue, stating that Turkey is prepared to be an "ideal platform" for negotiations between Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington.
At the same time, in the fall of 2024, Erdoğan emphasized that Ukraine's NATO accession is not a "matter to rush into."
Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, he stated that the US and other Western countries do not wish to see Ukraine in the alliance.
"We discuss these matters collegially and take into account the views of other NATO member countries before making a final decision," the Turkish president noted at that time.
On February 20, it became known that the Trump administration is considering the possibility of Ukraine's automatic accession to NATO if Russia violates the terms of a potential peace agreement. According to sources from NBC News, this mechanism could serve as one of the security guarantees for Kyiv.
