The Portuguese Navy has been monitoring five military ships for several days. These vessels are either passing by or currently near the country's shores.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing a statement from the Portuguese Navy on social media.
Since December 31, the Portuguese fleet has been tracking the movement of five Russian vessels. Among them are the landing ship "Alexander Shabalin," the transport ships Baltic Leader, "Sparta II," and "General Skobelev," which are already in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the submarine "Novorossiysk," operating near Portugal's exclusive economic zone.
According to reports, this monitoring operation marks the 73rd mission of the fleet in 2024.
"This fleet activity for monitoring and observation ensures the protection and security of the maritime space over which our national sovereignty, jurisdiction, and responsibility extend. It helps safeguard Portugal's interests and its critical infrastructure while simultaneously fulfilling our international obligations within the framework of the North Atlantic Alliance," the statement reads.
Recall that in mid-December, a French Navy Atlantique Atl2 aircraft conducted surveillance over the Baltic Sea, where the crew also detected a Russian military ship.
