An expert explained why Trump seeks "Canada's inclusion" and how far his trolling could go.

The statements made by newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the "annexation of Canada" are certainly not expressions of imperialistic ambitions. Rather, they seem to be more about trolling and a desire to profit.
Эксперт рассказал, зачем Трампу "присоединение Канады" и до какой степени он может зайти в своих провокациях.

The statements made by newly elected US President Donald Trump regarding the "annexation of Canada" are certainly not imperialistic ambitions. They are more about trolling and a desire to profit.

This is highlighted in the material from RBC-Ukraine Trolling about the 51st state. Why Trump talked about the "annexation of Canada" and is it realistic.

"This is definitely not imperialistic ambition. It is partly trolling and partly a classic Trump-style negotiation tactic. Alongside his statements about Canada and the 51st state, he has talked a lot about wanting additional tariffs from Canadians. He wants to profit from these relations and provide protection not for free," explained Alexander Kraev, an expert from the Ukrainian Prism Foreign Policy Council.

In fact, as the expert reminded, Trump began discussing "annexation" after realizing that his proposals regarding tariffs and increased Canadian defense spending were not being well-received.

"If you understand that your request will be rejected, you need to propose something even more radical, and then your initial request will seem like a reasonable compromise. In other words, Trump is following the strategies he promotes in his own books and public speeches," the interlocutor explained.

Moreover, the idea of annexing Canada has some support in the US, but it is only discussed in marginal political circles.

"It does not have nationwide support. Of course, it will be promoted now, and Trump supporters will talk about it. However, believe me, there have not been any real public debates on this matter," Kraev emphasized.

As for Fox News host Jesse Watters, his remarks about an invasion are certainly not indicative of any significant portion of public opinion. Rather, the network seems to be attempting to please Trump and ensure he continues to appear on their broadcasts.

How far such a policy regarding Canada can go depends on how much Trump wishes to profit from it.

"He wants to profit significantly, so he will continue to push the topic of the 51st state. There will be many provocations, and we will hear a lot more sharp statements from him. But I don't think it will escalate to any use of force at all. The most we can expect are tariffs on Canadian goods that he promises," the expert added.

Trump's Statements on the "Annexation of Canada"

US President-elect Donald Trump has openly expressed his desire to make Canada the 51st state for quite some time. Specifically, during his Christmas address, Trump discussed the "advantage" of including Canada in the US, mentioning significant tax reductions.

In turn, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to Trump's statement about Canada, calling Trump's assumption unfeasible.
