The High Court of Cassation and Justice of Romania has rejected the appeal of Călin Georgescu regarding the annulment of the presidential elections. The decision is final.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Digi 24.
It is stated that the court dismissed Georgescu's appeal as unfounded. Previously, the Bucharest Court of Appeal had rejected his claim.
The court determined that the Central Electoral Bureau merely executed the Constitutional Court's decision from December 6 to annul the elections, and its rulings are final and binding, thus not subject to appeal.
The court also ruled that by annulling the presidential elections, the Central Electoral Bureau did not violate the constitutional rights of the citizens of Romania.
In the presidential elections of November 2024, Georgescu ran as an independent candidate and unexpectedly won the first round with 23% of the votes.
He is regarded as an ultra-right politician with pro-Russian views. The decision to annul the results was made after the office of the President of Romania stated that there was intelligence confirming foreign influence on the elections.
Among other things, a hidden campaign on TikTok was mentioned, involving "manipulated" influencers and the use of algorithms, as well as over 85,000 cyberattacks. Intelligence indicated that Romania had become a target of aggressive hybrid actions by Russia, including information leaks and diversions.
As a result, the Constitutional Court annulled the results due to information regarding illegal financing of his campaign and potential interference from the Russian Federation. According to Romanian intelligence services, he violated electoral legislation by claiming zero campaign expenses. Meanwhile, it was revealed that only the TikTok videos were financed with 1 million euros.
We remind you that earlier the leaders of the ruling coalition parties in Romania agreed on the date for new elections - they will take place on May 4, 2025. If no winner is determined in the first round, the second round will be held on May 18.
It remains unclear whether Călin Georgescu will remain a presidential candidate. His participation in the elections will depend on the decision of the Constitutional Court, which may disqualify him due to the allegations.
