CNN published a report about U.S. citizens who are fighting as volunteers in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The network's journalists discovered that over 20 Americans who fought in Ukraine are considered missing in action.
This figure was also confirmed by Arthur Dobroserdov, the commissioner for missing persons at the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In at least some of the cases, those missing are likely deceased, though their deaths have not yet been confirmed, according to CNN.
The network claims to have information on five instances in the past six months where American volunteers have definitely died, but retrieving their bodies from the battlefield has been impossible.
Among the remains of 800 individuals transferred from Russia to Ukraine on Friday after complex negotiations, there were two Americans, CNN reports.
Lauren Guillaume, a member of the NGO RT Weatherman Foundation, which focuses on locating foreigners missing in action during the war in Ukraine, stated that the organization is currently handling cases of 88 deceased or missing individuals from 18 countries. Most of them are classified as missing, she clarified.
Background. It is worth noting that in July, British volunteer and medic Peter Fouché was killed at the front, known for his statement, “I am ashamed of the West.”
