The THAAD missile defense system that Poland will receive from the USA is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. These missiles pose a threat to Europe from the RF, but thanks to this new system, Europeans will gain effective protection. The presence of THAAD does not imply that Ukrainian territory will fall under its "umbrella." Aviation expert and Deputy Director of the electronic warfare company Anatoly Khrapchinsky discussed the specifics of the missile defense system in a live broadcast on the "Kyiv 24" channel.
Khrapchinsky explained that the USA will send the THAAD system to Poland, which was previously received by the allied country South Korea and will soon be acquired by another ally—Israel. The system can intercept a ballistic missile from the RF with a nuclear warhead: it can detect from a distance of 1,000 km and intercept at a distance of up to 200 km. The interception will occur in a "non-atmospheric environment," thereby protecting the residents of Western Europe and the USA from the missiles threatened by RF President Vladimir Putin.
"An example can be noted of the interception of the 'Dagger' missile, which was heading for a military airfield of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Starokostyantyniv, Khmelnytskyi region, but would have been intercepted over Kyiv," the aviation expert pointed out.
At the same time, the interviewee was not confident that this system would assist Ukraine in repelling air attacks from the RF. He mentioned the potential to obtain information from the THAAD geolocation system; however, on the other hand, the Air Forces of Ukraine already possess this data. Furthermore, it is not expected that Poland will use F-16 aircraft to intercept targets: this issue is still being debated among European politicians, while RF missiles will continue to maneuver freely outside the borders of Ukraine.
"I would say this is more of a protection for Europe, and it is difficult to say whether it will help Ukraine. We return to the issue of European bureaucracy, because Poland is a NATO country, and there will be a lot of debate about whether they can do this," Khrapchinsky concluded.
We remind you that on October 14, the media reported on the THAAD system, which will soon be deployed in Israel. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces shared whether they will use the experience of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to counter Iranian kamikaze drones.
