The head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Andriy Kovalenko, has refuted claims that Russia is prepared to mass-produce medium-range missiles known as "Oreshnik."
He wrote about this on Telegram.
One publication stated on December 9 that the occupiers could produce up to 300 missiles per year, which have a flight range of up to 4000 km and can carry multiple independently targetable warheads.
According to Kovalenko, the publication spreading this disinformation in the English-speaking space serves as a conduit for legitimizing information favorable to Russia and for its further dissemination. The sanctions imposed on Russia due to the war in Ukraine have significantly slowed down the production of high-tech missiles, he writes.
“Yes, they are producing X-101 or 'Caliber' missiles and stockpiling them thanks to the intensive use of Shahed. However, the production of more advanced missiles, such as 'Kinzhal,' is limited to just a few. The 'Oreshnik' represents an even more complex technological process, so the information about mass-producing this intercontinental ballistic missile is a deliberate fake. The aim of this disinformation is to instill fear in Western societies,” Kovalenko noted.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that a “experimental” Russian ballistic missile launched at the city of Dnipro had several warheads. This type of missile is known for its Multiple Independently-targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV), which carries a series of warheads, each capable of targeting its own objective, allowing one ballistic missile to conduct a large-scale attack on multiple targets.
