Ukrainian polar explorers have discovered an unusual iceberg in the heart of Antarctica (video).

Ukrainian polar explorers, against the backdrop of melting glaciers in Antarctica, discovered an unusual iceberg. Inside the ice mountain was a genuine freshwater pool.

A video was posted on the Facebook page of the National Antarctic Scientific Center. The footage was captured by the system administrator of the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition, Oleksandr Matsibura.

At the same time, scientists are "raising the alarm," as the rate of glacier melting in Antarctica is increasing over time. A greater amount of freshwater is flowing into the Southern Ocean.

Freshwater differs from saltwater in density, and the increase in its volume in the ocean may affect currents in global water bodies. Changes in these currents are being studied by Ukrainian scientists and polar explorers at the "Akademik Vernadsky" station as part of the European Union project "Horizon OCEAN: ICE."

In recent years, the area of the Antarctic ice cover has significantly decreased. In 2017, the extent of sea ice fell to a record low, and in 2022-2023, it decreased even further.

As reported earlier by "Telegraph," Ukraine may lose territory due to warming. The issue is also tied to the melting of sea ice on the glaciers.
